He visited his mother back in Pawtuxet Village for permission to enlist but she refused to give consent with him the only source of financial support for her, and his sister and two brothers. He was working as a clerk in the office of a mill supplier Frederick Miller in Providence when Governor Sprague issued an order for citizens to enlist for 3 years of service in the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers. At 16 years old, he left school to work when his father died at sea.
